3 Reasons to Define Your Target Market and Stop Trying to Please Everyone With Your Business

Blog Title - 3 Reasons to Define Your Target Market & Stop Trying to Please Everyone in Your Business

As humans (and women especially), we all have the need to be accepted by the crowd. To be liked and to not ruffle any feathers so that we don’t get shunned or thrown out of our group.

This is what keeps a lot of us from doing what we really want to in our lives, but are you aware that this need can have a seriously detrimental impact on your business?

It’s true. Trying to please everyone and be everything for everyone with your business is not going to help you reach your goals.

What is going to help is getting clear on who you’re serving and why.

Here are three reasons to define your target market and stop trying to please everyone with your business.

You’re Never Going to Be Able to Please Everyone

First things first, you are absolutely never ever in a million freaking years, going to please everyone. You are not for everyone and that is amazing. That is what makes you unique and that is what draws people to you.

There will always be people in the comments who are going to share their opinions about what you do, good or otherwise. Your job is to listen without judgment and take what feels good and leave what doesn’t.

In short, you do you.

The people who are truly there for you and are your people, who you want to connect with and work with will always be there for you and leave the rest.

Or again, in short, they can fuck off.

Excuse my language, but it’s true. Anyone who is not your audience, not your ideal client, not who you really want to be talking to and working with can fuck off with their opinions.

Like if you have a problem with my language, I’m sorry but you’re probably not for me or my business. I wish you all the best and that you find someone that you truly resonate with. Because it’s not going to be me, and neither of us are doing each other any favors pretending otherwise.

You’re going to drive yourself crazy trying to follow each and every opinion someone else has and your audience isn’t going to get to know the amazing, powerful, REAL you. There’s nothing that you need to do besides doing you. And doing you doesn’t include the opinions of others.

So stop, stop, stop, stop, stop trying to please everyone and thinking that everyone is going to be a fit for your business. It’s NEVER going to happen.

Your Message Becomes Confusing

Second, when you’re completely focused on trying to please everyone and be everything with your business, your message gets incredibly clouded and so disorganized people don’t even know what you’re doing anymore.

You’re going in so many different directions trying to please every single person out there which leaves your message incredibly unclear.

Are you doing this? Or are you, are you doing that? Or are you kind of a mixture of the two?

Or even worse…

Do you stand for this? Or do you stand for that? You can’t stand for both, but it kind of looks like you’re trying…

And then people get confused and they don’t want to work with you because they don’t even know what you do.

You want to have this crystal clear message that resonates with the people that you want to reach, that you want to work with and forget about everyone else. You don’t want one that is so confusing no one really gets to know you or your business and what you are here on this earth to do.

The Universe Responds to Clarity

This is the biggest reason you should define your target market. The universe always responds to clarity. It can’t give you something if you don’t know what you want in the first place.

Once you get clear on who you want to serve in your business, the universe will respond in miraculous ways.

What happens is that by defining your ideal client and getting clarity on who you want to be bringing in to your business, you energetically open up space for these people to come into your life. You tell the universe, “this is what I’m here for” and the universe responds “you got it.”

That is what is going to make the difference. Your energy. Put out the energy that you want to receive and that energy will come back to you. And you can’t do that when you’re uncertain about who you’re targeting in your business.

How to Define Your Target Market

So how can you begin to define your target market and draw in people who love what you’re doing and want to work with you?

We go DEEP into defining your market and getting aligned inside the Pre-Launch Alignment Workbook and training in the Magical Marketing Academy. Click here to join and get instant access!

Here are three steps to get you started:

Who do you want to work with?

The first thing you want to do is sit down, get quiet, dig deep, and get real with yourself about who you want to work with.

Who is this person? Who are you here on this planet to help?

Write down every single that you know about this person.

  • Are they a feminine or masculine?
  • How old are they?
  • Where do they live?
  • What does their family life look like?
  • What income do they make?
  • Where do they shop?
  • What do they like to do in their free time?
  • What are their core values?

These are just a few suggestions to get you started. There are many different ways you can narrow this down, but the main point is to know everything you can about the person you would ideally like to work with.

TIP: If you’re finding this difficult, some people prefer to create a persona and give a name to their ideal client profile like they are talking about a real person.

What are the problems they’re facing?

Once you know everything about who this person is, it’s time to take a step further and get to know what their pain points are.

What are they struggling with? Are the problems they’re facing in their life? What do they need help with?

Write those down everything that comes up and be sure to dig in DEEP. Chances are you’ve been in their shoes before and you’ve had these same problems.

How do they impact their lives? How would their lives change if they didn’t have this issue anymore?

Write it all down, get really clear and dig really, really deep into these pain points because this is where you’re going to make that deep connection with your audience. You need to know everything about who you’re talking to. Who they are, what problems they’re facing, and what they need to move forward.

Reevaluate and clear space for your ideal clients

Now that you’ve gotten crystal clear on who it is you want to work with and the problems that they’re facing, it’s time for you to actually make space for these people to come in.

Reevaluate your current marketing activities. Are they aligned with your ideal clients? Or should you scrap it because you were only doing it because someone told you you had to?

Go through your product offerings, your website, your social media, your email marketing, your sales strategy, and take a second look at EVERYTHING. Because now that you know how you’re targeting, everything you do should be for THEM.

And once you get rid of those things that aren’t in favor of that mission, you clear a ton of space for the people you actually want to reach find you. For the universe to bring them to you.

Remember, the universe responds to clarity. So get crystal clear on who you’re serving, what you’re here for, and make space for the universe to say, “I got you.”
