Today let’s talk social media.
Specifically a fundamental social media concept.
Because let’s be real, if you don’t have your fundamentals down, you can’t really expect to grow much.
I mean, you’d never build a building without a strong foundation, right? It’s not going to be pretty and it’s probably going to fall over. The same goes for you social media marketing.
So, let’s take the time to review the foundation of your social media marketing and ask the one question that really matters to your strategy.
“Why are people following me?” or “Why should someone follow me?”
It’s kind of a scary thing to ask because you’re really judging yourself here.
“Am I doing this right, am I giving enough, do people want to know this, am I good enough to do this?”
Here’s what it comes down to…
You have to provide value.
Whether you’re teaching someone a new skill or filling some sort of void in their life, you need to make sure that you’re contributing to their life in a positive way, that you’re providing real value.
This is what is going to make people follow you. This is what is going to make people want to see you pop up in their news feed, click that like button, and engage with your page. Your audience needs to be getting something for their life out of this.
So ask yourself, “how do I provide these people value?”
When I think about myself, I think, “I’m on social media to teach people a new skill. Something that’s going to help them in their life and help them grow their business, so they can life the life they’ve always dreamed of living.”
Everything I do is for the reason of helping people learn a new skill that they can apply to their life and better their business with.
With that being said, I want you to sit down today and think, when it comes to your social media strategy, “why would someone want to follow me?”
My suggestion is to journal it out. Take a clean piece of paper, write that question at the top and then take the time to brain dump all of your thoughts below. Then do the same process with the question, “how am I providing value to my audience?” This will help you get really clear on what your real purpose is on social media.
If your answer to those questions and what you’re currently doing don’t match up (for example you have a mission statement of wanting to help people and do amazing things, but you’re posting cat memes all day), take the action to bring your social media strategy in alignment with your true business purpose.
This is how you grow your social media in a way to that also grows your business in a way that feels good, and not like you’re a slimy salesperson just trying to make a buck.
