So I’m currently reading this book called Let The Elephants Run and it’s been so motivational!
Essentially, it encourages you to release and believe in your creativity. But there was one section that I really enjoyed…
Pink elephants.
So what the heck is a pink elephant?
Well, a pink elephant is those wildly big dreams and ideas your mind comes up with. You know, the ones that sound SO crazy there’s no way it could actually ever happen?
Here was my pink elephant idea – owning my own marketing business.
That’s right. My current business WAS my pink elephant!
When I was 14 or 15, I took my first marketing class. During this class, I could’t help but think how cool it would be to own my own marketing business. Knowing how crazy that sounded and how much people would probably tell me I’m nuts, I kept that idea to myself.
Now when I pictured this business of mine, I saw myself in the corner office with a big window. You know, the corporate life.
Years later, turns out I LOATH office life. I would literally cry on my 45 minute drive home from the office. Now, I run my business from the comfort of wherever the hell I wanna be and I without a doubt LOVE it.
Now, after that fateful class in high school, I slowly worked towards my pink elephant dream. I majored in international business, but it wasn’t until I studied abroad that things started to click in my head.
I took an internship in Argentina where I had the opportunity to learn more about working remotely. After I graduated, I worked in the corporate world for a bit (tune back to my LOATH comment above) and when it all got to be too much, I jumped ship and started contracting as a Virtual Assistant.
When I announced my plan to leave the corporate world and launch my first online business, the negativity started rolling in. People stomped all over the idea, but nevertheless, I continued on forward.
And here we are!
I’m loving everything about my decision and it’s even better than what I first thought back in high school.
So how does this pink elephant topic connect to marketing?
Well, marketing was BORN from a pink elephant. Everything really was. Facebook was once a wild idea that is BOOMING now. You don’t think the guy who invented the internet wasn’t considered a quack at one point?
That place where your pink elephants come from is where you are most aligned. So as much as you possibly can, you need to recognize and nurture your pink elephants. They might be the EXACT thing you need to fight for.
