My husband and I were talking about something the other day, and I had an epiphany.
Like, full-blown, lightbulb above the head epiphany.
Most people are talking to their audience completely WRONG and they don’t even realize it.
(And it’s KILLING your conversions!)
Today I’m going to share what most people are doing wrong with their messaging and how you can avoid it.
So here’s the deal…
I have always been an awful singer. Legitimately terrible. And that’s a story that I’ve been living with my entire life.
But my husband is a musician. He loves to sing, loves to play many different instruments, and he’s even constantly talking about music. As you can imagine, he’s always wanted us to be able to do this together, but it’s never worked out because, like I said before, I’m a terrible singer.
Then, the other night we were hanging out with some music on and the topic came up again. He told me how much he wished that we could sign together, but this time he added that the biggest problem I have is that I constrict my throat when I sing and he gave me a few little pointers.
I had never been told any of that before and when I made the little adjustments, he told me “holy shit, you actually sound decent. Not good and you need a lot of practice, but you actually made a real tune.”
This shocked me. My entire life I held onto this story that I was a terrible singer, but it wasn’t that I was bad at it, I had just never been taught to sing.
That was the thing. No one had ever taught me those foundational basics before.
And that was my realization. We need to stop treating people like they know everything. There are people out there who don’t know the very basics of saying, but you’re talking to them like they do.
They don’t know why what you’re talking about is important. They don’t know the technical terms and abbreviations. They don’t know that they can be great at this. They don’t know, what they don’t know.
We have to stop talking to people and treating people like they already know what the hell is going on because chances are, they don’t.
What can you do about this?
This can sometimes be difficult to figure out when we’re doing it. Since you’ve been in your industry for so long, you are constantly surrounded by all of these things that seem like common knowledge. But that’s just to you.
But one of the things you can do to make sure you’re talking as clearly to your audience as possible, is to send whatever you’re writing to someone you trust, who you know has absolutely no idea what you’re talking about and ask them if it makes sense. They’ll be able to guide you because they are the person who doesn’t know anything.
There’s a huge learning curve to a lot of our products and services, so we have to remember that not everyone is at the same level. Some people have had a story in their head their entire life that they’re a terrible singer, but they just haven’t been taught how to sing.
